Beginning with a sock in mind

Yet another decade has passed since I last blogged. As always, warm greetings to my followers, who are family and dear friends. For this blog, I would like to begin with a sock in mind.

Yes, beginning with a sock in mind… This blog is inspired by a sock-knitting project, which I learned yesterday at Sew Steamboat. My friend Kate B. and I started a basic sock project (see pattern below) in a 3 series sock class. I had never thought knitting a sock would be trickier than a sweater with cable patterns or crocheting dollies. To my surprise, using four tiny size 1 needles are much more difficult than any knitting pattern or projects I have ever done. Though I will master, it is a 3 series sock class for knitting a pair of socks… that’s two socks! Nevertheless, I had begun with a sock in mind and shall end with a pair of socks.

Shown as of 08:00 MST, June 19, 2013; stay posted for progress…

Basic Sock Pattern: Gauge: 32 stitches per 4 inches Materials: 1) 400 yards sock yarn, 2) 1 set of 4 double pointed needles or any size that works with the gauge Pattern: CO 64 stitches and join in the round; do not twist. (CO 64 will make Women’s Medium 8” circumference, 9” foot length. This will fit the majority; the trick is to measure your feet and make a smaller size by at least 1”. As always, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUAGE). Work 2x2 rib (K2, P2) for 1” Stockinette (knit every stitch) until the piece measures 7” from beginning. Do not work more than 8”. Heel: K16, turn and P 32 back across to create the heel. Transfer un-worked stitches to needles to reserve while working heel. Row 1 of Heel: Sl 1 st purlwise, K1 st*, repeat from * to end. Turn. Row 2 of Heel: Sl 1 st purlwise, purl the rest across. Turn. Repeat heel rows until 32 rows have been knit – 16 selvedge chains. Turn Heel: Row 1: Sl 1 st, K17, SSK, K1, turn. Row 2: Sl 1 st, P5, P2tog, P1, turn. Row 3: Sl 1 st, K to 1 st before gap, SSK, K1, turn. Row 4: Sl 1 st, P to 1 st before gap, P2tog, P1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches have been used. End last two rows with SSK and P2tog. Gusset: Row 1: One needle knit all heels stitches and pick up 15 st down the side of heel. On needle 2, K across all instep st. On needle 3, pick up 15 stitches up the side of the heel and K 8 heel sts. This is the new beginning of the rows. Row 2: On needle 1, K to 3 stitches from the end of needle. K2tog, K1. On needle 2, K all stitches. On needled 3, K1, SSK, K to the end of needle. Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you are reduced to 16 sts on needles 1 and 3 (64 sts). K all sts until the sock measured from the heel 2” shorter than your foot. Toe: Row 1: On needle 1, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. On needle 2, K1, SSK, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. On needle 3, K1, SSK, K rest of stitches on needle. Row 2: K all stitches. Continue knitting rows 1 and 2 until stitches are reduced to 32. Then repeat row, 1 until the sts are reduced to 16. Graft toe together with knitchener stitch.
